Our cousin's recipe always sparks a lively discussion, where everyone expresses their opinion on the perfect size of a square. Some family members have a sweeter tooth than others (we won't give names).

Maple square

Ingredients

  • 375 ml (1 ½ cups) flour

  • 60 ml (¼ cup) brown sugar

  • 125 ml (½ cup) butter

  • 375 ml (1 ½ cups) brown sugar

  • 375 ml (1 ½ cups) H77 maple syrup

  • 3 eggs

  • 45 ml (3 tbsp.) flour

  • 1 ml (¼ teaspoon) salt

  • 5 ml (1 tsp) vanilla

Preparation

  • In a bowl, mix the flour, brown sugar and butter until you obtain a grainy texture.

  • Grease an 8-inch square pan.

  • Press the mixture into the bottom of the mold and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 10 to 15 minutes.

  • In a saucepan, bring the brown sugar and syrup to a boil.

  • Beat eggs in a large bowl.

  • Pour the brown sugar and syrup mixture over the beaten eggs, stirring constantly.

  • Add the flour, salt and vanilla to the egg mixture and mix well.

  • Pour this mixture onto the crust and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 20 to 25 minutes.
